Bumper Damage
To the left is a pic of the damage done to James' bumper. It seems that James backed into a truck with its tail gate down. As with any type of refinishing job, I started by washing the car and then masking everything but the area being refinished. With the majority of the car masked, I wiped down the bumper with a wax and grease remover. With these preparation steps complete, the repair could begin.

The damaged area required reinforcement from the back side of the bumber. I used a 3M Easy Fix flexible patch. This product does require the use of an adhesion promoter. The patch is super easy to use, and not only provides strength from the back of the bumber, but it also keeps the urethane repair material from going all the way through the bumper.

Urethane Patch
Here is a shot of the bumper with urethane-based plastic-repair material filling the damaged area. This layer actually bonds the damaged plasitc and can be used to begin to fill the damaged area to the correct height.

After sanding the urethane plastic-repair material, I used a high build flexible surfacer and guide coat to aid in the elemination of the remaining sand scratches. surfacer and guide coat

base coat
With the surfacer and guide coat sanded down, I cleaned the area again and sprayed the base coat. I only sprayed base coat in the areas that needed attention. Obviously one of those areas was the repair area, but I also repaired several small rock dings while I was at it, and those areas needed base coat as well.

As soon as the base coat is dry, it is time to spray the clear coat. I laid the clear coat on a bit heavy and ended up with several runs and sags. I dry sanded with 800 grit sand paper to level out the runs and sags. I then used an electric buffer and rubbing compound to remove the sand scratches. After using the rubbing compound, I applied a poslshing wax to remove the swirls left behind by the rubbing compound. At this point the repair was finished. I removed all of the masksing, cleaned any residue left behind by the masking tape, and washed the whole car one meore time so that it would look nice for the customer to pick up. Buffing
